Facial Composite Software from 1998
I think it looks a little like Elvis, maybe more like the winner of an Elvis lookalike contest.
I can’t remember where I saw it, but I read somewhere about identikit/facial composite software(wiki page here.) and I really wanted to get at some because I love that uncanny look they all have. But it wasn’t so simple to find some, I found one or two sort of, kids toys, old digital “become a real detective!” type software. It was so hard to find mostly because the software isn’t sold to just anyone, you have to email or call up whichever provider and tell them what police station you’re buying it for, or that you’re some sort of registered private investigator. but the software I came across first in my search, after a day or two of looking, is the one used in the cover for this post, called “FACES”, specifically FACES 3.0, which i got here on the internet archive.
There’s a surprising amount of facial features available, you can even move and resize some of them. I found it a lot harder than I thought to put something together but it was a lot of fun. I think I’ll definitely make a couple more and put them in the gallery. Maybe a whole project on recreating famous faces, I feel it could work well as a little artistic thing about crime and fame and recognition of famous faces. A fading memory of Elvis Presley, caught somewhere between his early good lucks and his late rapid decline. How far can you push a human face that’s so recognisable before it turns back into something normal. Or maybe some kind of uncanny Andy Warhol.
At the very least I’ll be trying to track down more software like this, thanks for reading :)
